⚡ In short

  • Advance parole (document I-512L) is permission to come back to the US that you must get before you leave. Without it, U4U parole ends the moment you depart (8 CFR 212.5(e)).
  • File Form I-131, Part 1, item 5.H, by mail only, fee $630. A fee waiver is generally not available for this category.
  • When you return, CBP charges the parole fee: $1,050 since 10/16/2026. Government fees alone total at least $1,680.
  • TPS holders travel on a different document: I-512T ($580 online / $630 by mail). But returning on TPS ends your eligibility for a new parole.
  • No document guarantees entry: the CBP officer decides. Since 08/13/2026 (Matter of Delcarmen-Lara), a trip can trigger a 3- or 10-year bar if you have over 180 days of unlawful presence.

🛂 What advance parole is

📄What is advance parole and why do Ukrainians need it?+

Advance parole (document I-512L) is advance permission to return to the US after a trip abroad. You get it while you are still in the US.

  • U4U parole ends automatically once you leave the US (8 CFR 212.5(e)).
  • There are no new U4U entries since late January 2025, so you cannot come back on your old parole.
  • Advance parole lets you ask for entry at the border. After entry you are a parolee again until the date on your new I-94.

For a parolee, leaving without advance parole means you will not be able to return on parole.

🔄How is advance parole different from re-parole?+

Both are filed on Form I-131, but they are different.

  • Re-parole extends your stay in the US. It is only for people inside the US.
  • Advance parole is permission to leave and come back. It does not extend parole by itself: CBP sets the period after entry.
  • If your parole is ending soon, take care of re-parole first. Read: U4U re-parole.
🙋Who can apply for advance parole under U4U?+
  • A person with valid parole who is currently in the US.
  • File before you leave and wait for the decision in the US. If you leave earlier, the application is usually treated as abandoned.
  • If your parole has already expired, count your days of unlawful presence: over 180 days means a risk of a bar after the trip.
  • Each person, including a child, files a separate I-131.

If you have arrests, denials or violations, talk to a licensed immigration attorney before filing.

🇺🇦Can I travel to Ukraine on advance parole?+

Yes, but only with a document received before departure, and with no guarantee you will be let back in.

  • In I-131 (Part 7) you list the purpose, countries and dates. Tell the truth and explain the humanitarian reason: illness, a funeral and so on.
  • On return you pay the $1,050 parole fee unless an exception applies.
  • Ukrainian men face exit restrictions from Ukraine under martial law. Check the State Border Guard Service rules before you go.

Advance parole: document first, then travel
📝How do I fill out I-131 for advance parole?+
  • Part 1: for a current parolee, item 5.H.
  • Part 7: trip dates, purpose, countries, number of trips and length.
  • Add evidence of the purpose: medical records, a death certificate, an invitation and so on.
  • Add copies of your passport, I-94 and parole documents. Check photos and other requirements against the I-131 instructions (check the form edition on the day you file).
  • Mail filing only. Attend biometrics if scheduled.

A wrong Part 1 item or missing evidence of purpose is a common cause of RFEs and delays.

💵How much does advance parole cost in 2026?+
  • USCIS fee for I-131 (advance parole): $630, by mail (G-1055).
  • Parole fee at the border on return: $1,050 since 10/16/2026, cannot be waived with I-912. There are exceptions, for example for people with a pending I-485.
  • Total government fees: at least $1,680 per person, before tickets.
  • Preparing the application with us: we agree on the price in Telegram, depending on your situation.
⏱️How long does advance parole take, and can it be expedited?+
  • Check the official time in USCIS Processing Times. Plan with months, not weeks, of margin.
  • Do not buy non-refundable tickets before approval.
  • If the reason is urgent (serious illness or a death in the family), you can request an expedite with documents. How: USCIS expedite.
🔁How many times can I travel on advance parole?+
  • It depends on the document: one or multiple trips and until what date. It is printed on the I-512L.
  • A parolee pays the $1,050 fee on every return.
  • You cannot return after the document expires, even if your parole is still valid.

🛡️ Advance parole and TPS

🛡️Do I need advance parole if I have TPS?+
  • A holder of approved TPS travels on I-512T (TPS Travel Authorization): I-131, Part 1, item 4, $580 online / $630 by mail, a fee waiver (I-912) can be requested.
  • If TPS is still pending, you need regular advance parole (I-512L).
  • Without travel permission you can lose TPS and be unable to return.

Ukraine TPS news after 10/19/2026: TPS for Ukrainians.

⚖️I have both parole and TPS. Which do I choose: I-512L or I-512T?+

This is the key decision before a trip.

  • USCIS says that if you were previously paroled and now return on TPS, that admission makes you ineligible for a new parole.
  • According to Nova Ukraine volunteers, after returning on advance parole (class «DA») re-parole eligibility remains.
  • The future of Ukraine TPS after 10/19/2026 is uncertain, so returning on I-512T may close the re-parole path.

Make this decision only after talking to an attorney.

⚠️ Risks

🛃Does advance parole guarantee I will be let back in?+

No. The CBP officer at the border makes the final decision.

  • Bring the original I-512L, passport, I-797 and copies of pending applications.
  • Answer truthfully and briefly. Do not sign documents you do not understand.
  • Violations, overstays or criminal cases can cost you the right to return.
⛔What is Matter of Delcarmen-Lara and why does it matter?+

Since 08/13/2026 the BIA decision Matter of Delcarmen-Lara treats a trip on advance parole as a departure for unlawful presence bars.

  • Over 180 days of unlawful presence: you may be found inadmissible for 3 years after return.
  • 1 year or more: for 10 years.
  • Check your I-94 and count the days if your parole ever expired.
📬What happens to my pending applications while I am abroad?+
  • An unanswered RFE means a denial. Ask someone in the US to watch your mail and USCIS account.
  • Leaving without permission with a pending I-485 or asylum application: it will be treated as abandoned.
  • Pending re-parole: if you are abroad, a new parole may be denied because it is granted to people in the US.
